Plant Sale - 2009

RECORD # PLANTS = RECORD SALES

The 2009 Plant Sale is over, and what a great success it was.  The line at 8am was the longest I have ever seen.  It was actually a bit frightening.  Even though we purchased abourt 140 new sleds last fall (and I wrongly predicted that we would have enough), we ran out about 2/3 through the line.  Guess we will just have to get more.  And more boxes too!

We had record numbers of plants (over 25,000) offered and record sales (will get the number to you when the bank deposit is confirmed because we don't believe it!!), plus an operation that generally worked better than last year with lines over a shorter period of time and fewer problems, thanks to everyone's hard work.

There were many visits to the educational exhibits that Sharon coordinated (a big thank you for that), many questions at the SEWMG building, and lots of other opportunities to educate our customers while they were selecting from the wide variety of perennial plants that we potted in the weeks prior to the sale.  Generally we had a happy crowd brought in by (free) publicity from the local television stations.  Gardeners are such nice people and gardeners getting a bargain are the best!

The ATM placed by State Fair (at no cost to us) was also a big hit with lots of usage.  Likely made for bigger sales. too.  Thanks State Fair.

And now a great number of Plant Sale rookies are experienced veterans.  We expect you back next year to train the new crew of rookies, who won't believe the "war stories" either (you didn't).   Thanks again to all of you who worked on any aspect of the sale.  This major league sale is truly a group effort.  Planning for 2010 has  begun and will continue at the Post Sale get together in mid to late June.  Stay tuned for more...

Plant Sale Updates and Special Notes (From Before Sale)

Label Request

Here are the hours:

SATURDAY, May 9th, 9:00.
Work day at the State Fair Park to get the area in shape.   We will have a couple of loads of wood chips delivered for our walk ways.  So, bring your shovels, rakes, etc. to help deal with them.  A couple of wheelbarrows would be helpful.  With a good crew, we should be done by 11:00.

MONDAY, May 11th, 9:00.
We begin receiving plants and getting them properly organized.  We will need help in "receiving" and "shipping" to their proper locations.  We will begin to get large shipments of plants from our big digs.  We may need help with labeling those plants that arrive without labels.  There will be plenty to do.  Bring gloves, clippers, trowels, and lots of good humor.  We will provide lunch for those who would like to stay into the afternoon.  Those who would like to drop off plants can begin to do so on Monday.  Please remember that we need them labeled.  Done by 4:00

TUESDAY, May 12th, 9:00am.
Same as Monday.

WEDNESDAY, May 13th, 9:00am.
Same as Tuesday, except we hang around until 6:00 for those who need to bring plants in after normal working hours.

THURSDAY, May 14th, 9:00am.
Same as Tuesday.  However, if you are going to be bringing plants in during the afternoon, we may not be there.  Thursday afternoon is usually very dead, and we're mostly done.  Give us a call (by Thurs morning) if you're coming in on Thurs. afternoon.

FRIDAY, May 15th, 9:00am.
Last minute stuff being done and making ready for the sale.  Would prefer NOT to receive plants for the sale.  Gus Ganorski will be broadcasting from the grounds beginning in the 6:00 (AM!) hour, so if you'd like to be on TV show up then.  We'll have some demos and interviews for the broadcasts.
normal working hours.

FRIDAY, May 15th, 3:00pm
The sale for Master Gardeners begins.  We can make purchases from the sale stock; however, some restrictions.     7:00pm.  End of sale for MGs.  Final distribution for silent auction plants.

SATURDAY, May 16th.  8:00am.   PLANT SALE!
We recommend you get there early!  If you're there before 6:00, you probably won't get charged for parking.  Please park against the fence along-side 84th street...no use our customers walking past our cars to get to theirs.  We will assign jobs and responsibilities according to interests and abilities.  For the new people:  you will NOT be bored.  The 8:00-9:00 hour is a feeding frenzy with lots of people with questions and in need of help.   The sale ends at 1:00, so we'll need people to be available to generally clean up.

MONDAY, May 18th.  9:00am.
Plant pick up for the official gardens tended by Master Gardener Volunteers (e.g., Old World, State Fair, Etc.).   At 11:00, we will invite the representatives of Habitat for Humanity to take whatever else is left.  We'll need some help with cleaning up the grounds and moving our materials out of the DNR area.
