UW-Extension
youth programs teach young people about responsibility, decision-making,
problem solving and leadership. Through hands-on activities,
youth learn practical life skills while having fun. Activities
include civic engagement, nurtrition, cultural competency, enrichment in the arts, community gardening, camping,
sewing, cooking and computer technology.
Extension partners with schools, churches, youth-serving
agencies and community groups to sponsor 4-H youth
development programs throughout the county. The focus of these programs
is building strong character and future leaders. |
Program Highlights

4-H Community Clubs
4-H provides real-life experiences for youth through practical,
learn-by-doing educational programs. It is for all youth in
grades K-13 (one year out of high school). Wherever you live,
suburb or city, 4-H has something for you. 4-H activities
help youth develop self-esteem, become responsible young adults,
gain a sense of belonging and improve decision-making, communication

African Diaspora Leadership Program
The African Diaspora Program fosters leadership, life skills
and global education. It has been designed to provide urban high school youth with an understanding of Pan African leadership.
Pan African represents the aggregation of the historical, cultural, artistic, scientific and philosophical legacies of people of African decent. The program goal is to promote Africa's rich culture and create a mutual kinship of Africans and African Americans. The objective is to build confidence in urban youth and their ability to become culturally compentent, whereas they develop leadership capacities. The program components include: Rites of Passage, African language, research projects, and a simulated African Union Conference. Youth will learn practical decision-making, problem solving, organizing, prioritizing and negotiating skills. In addition, students will become aware of systems of governance. Community Learning Center
The 21st Street Community Learning Center offers school aged children with daily homework help, academic enrichment and recreation. The program objective is to provide students with lessons in reading with fluency and improved math skills by providing one-on-one tutoring and hands-on learning provided through service learning students and interns. The program offer K-4 thru 5th grade students with a safe learning environment where instructors provide daily enrichment in core subject areas. Our students learn through an experiential learning model that expose them to culturally appropriate materials. The program offers computers and involves students in a chess club, reading club, dance and drama teams. Students are also involved in team sports. There are mentors and parent programs available to provide assistance. A summer enrichment program will be offered in June 2009. Youth Leadership Trainings: Train youth how to become better leaders. Developing positivie self images in practical ways as youth learn and develop life skills. Life skills are critical the youth development process. The Youth Leadership programs teaches youth entrepreneurship, civic engagement, gardening and mentoring. The youth leadership program will provide youth with an practical leadership skills. Mini Society Entrepreneurship Program
The Mini Society Teacher Training is a "train the trainer" Entrepreneurial Leadership program created by the Kauffman Foundation. Entrepreneurship has emerged as an increasingly dominant force in our nation's economy, as entrepreneurs create new goods and services, technologies and most of our country's jobs. The Mini Society workshop provides educators with training and curriculum to teach children entrepreneurship through an experiential process. This hands-on program is free or charge.. All participants will have to complete the 20 hours of training before receiving the curriculum. Continuing Education units are available for all participants.
